Can microfiber leather get wet?
Jul 29 , 2025
When microfiber leather gets wet, it usually doesn't react in the same way as real leather. For example, real leather might absorb water and then take a long time to dry properly. It could also change in texture or even get damaged if it stays wet for too long.
Microfiber leather, on the other hand, is often made in a way that it doesn't absorb water as readily. The synthetic fibers it's made of can repel water to some extent.
However, that doesn't mean it's completely okay to let it get soaked all the time. If
microfiber leather gets wet frequently or is left in a wet state for an extended period, it can still face problems. The water might seep into the inner layers of the material over time, which could lead to issues like mold growth. Mold can not only make the microfiber leather look bad with those black or green spots but also give off an unpleasant smell.
Also, when it gets wet, the shape of the microfiber leather item might change. For instance, if it's a pair of shoes made of
microfiber leather and they get really wet, they might lose their original shape as the water affects the structure of the material. And once the water dries, there could be some wrinkling or distortion that makes the shoes look less presentable.
In addition, if the
microfiber leather has been treated with certain coatings or finishes to make it more water-resistant, getting it wet too often can wear off those protective layers. Then it becomes more vulnerable to stains and other forms of damage in the future. So while it can handle getting wet to some degree, it's best to dry it off as soon as possible when it does get wet and avoid exposing it to excessive moisture on a regular basis.
