Material Introduction

A ball is a pressure vessel wrapped in leather. Every panel carries the same load at 1.0 bar, and the material has three jobs: hold the shape at the seam, keep the weight stable when it rains, and stay grippy after the print and the clear coat.

Our ball leather is a PU top coat on a microfiber base, embossed with a pebble grain deep enough to grip a wet hand but shallow enough that panel printing and hot-foil registration stay clean. Thickness runs 1.2 mm for volleyball and training footballs, 1.4 mm for match footballs and basketballs, 1.6 mm for street and rugby balls where abrasion is the deciding failure.

The base decides the seam. A microfiber nonwoven resists needle elongation better than knitted cloth, so stitch holes close behind the needle instead of tearing when the bladder is pumped.

Product Feature and Application

Stitch holes that close. Needle penetration is tested on the ordered construction; the base recovers around the thread so the seam does not creep at 1.0 bar. That separates a ball that survives a season from one that fails at the third inflation.

Weight that stays inside spec. Water uptake is measured per order. A match ball has a narrow weight window, and a leather that gains weight in rain takes the ball out of it.

Grip and print on the same surface. Grain depth is held across the roll so panel printing, clear coat and hot-foil logos register the same on the first and last panel.

Applications: match and training footballs, basketballs, volleyballs, rugby and American footballs, handballs, plus stress and promotional balls.

Production Details

Coating, embossing, surface treatment and inspection run as one line under one lot number. Every roll is gauged at three points across the width, and shade read against the approved swatch under D65 before winding.

Reports travel with the shipment: REACH SVHC, RoHS, ISO 105 colorfastness to rubbing and to light, plus abrasion, flex and adhesion run on the construction you order. Quality system ISO 9001 certified. Test method and limit are written into the purchase specification, not assumed from a catalogue.

1. 1. 1. 1.2 mm or 1.6 mm for a size 5 match ball? 1.4 mm is the usual start for a stitched match football: enough body that the seam does not dish, thin enough to keep the finished weight and touch. Drop to 1.2 mm for volleyball or a light training ball.
      
      Will the seam tear at 1.0 bar? Not if the base is microfiber and stitch density is right. Needle hole elongation fails first, so we test the ordered construction rather than quote a catalogue figure.
      
      How much weight does it gain in rain? Measured per order and reported. Closed-cell PU on a microfiber base absorbs far less than felt-backed vinyl, and a water-repellent finish can be added for outdoor use.
      
      Can it be high-frequency welded instead of stitched? Yes, on the TPU-faced construction. Tell us the welding process at sample stage; the face formulation differs from a stitched article.
      
      Does it crack in winter? Cold flex is tested at -10 C on request. Cheap ball leather whitens along the seam before it cracks.
